They Said he was “Unbeatable” Until This Happened
Happy Birthday, Arthur Ashe.
Fifty years ago this month, Ashe became the first black player to win the Wimbledon tennis championship.
Here’s how he did it:
He changed the game.
He was known for agressive play, but he was competing against a stronger, harder-hitting rival, Jimmy Connors.
So Ashe slowed the game. He hit change-of-pace slice shots. Lots of lobs. Softer, but more accurate serves.
Before the match, pundits called Connors “unbeatable” and predicted he’d crush Ashe.
Instead, Ashe’s game surprised and frustrated Connors.
Ashe beat him 6ā1, 6ā1, 5ā7, 6ā4.
After the match, Ashe said, “The best way to win against someone like Connors is to not play the game he wants you to play.”
“You want to play your own game…”
Marketing master Dan Kennedy often says this about business strategy and tactics:
āLook around at what everyone else is doing, and do the opposite.ā
A few weeks ago he added this on social media:
“Sameness is slow death… You donāt want to be better at playing their game. You want to play your own game entirely.”
