The Most Important Person in The World

Five women celebrate a 60th birthday with cake and tea, sitting around a table. Large gold 60 balloons decorate the wall behind them. One woman looks surprised and happy.

Today is my 60th birthday.

Thirty-five years ago today, on my 25th birthday, my dad died. Colon cancer. He was 51.

So today (and every March 7) is a day I celebrate…

…AND I remember Wallace Renard Ruwitch.

I remember what my maternal grandmother, Miriam, told me about him that night 35 years ago:

ā€œWhen he talked to you,ā€ she said, ā€œhe made you feel like you were the most important person in the world.ā€

I’ve carried that with me ever since. It’s engraved on Page 1 of LIfe’s Operating Instructions.

Dad was gone before I became a husband and father, a business owner and boss, an entrepreneur and marketer.

But he’s always with me, inspiring and guiding me.

Dad reminds me to think — ALWAYS — about how the other person feels.

When they feel heard, when they feel understood, when they feel like the most important person in the world…

…they win…

…and so do you.

Thanks, Dad. I’m trying. I hope you’re proud.

Don't go away yet..
