The Reason Apple Wins…

I bumped into a group of grumpy marketers this morning who think storytelling is worthless.

Said one: “I have never understood the appeal of storytelling. I know people talk about the importance of it over and over again, but I really can’t give a f*%k. Story, mission, vision, it’s all bulls*%t; I only care about the value I get from their products.”

Said another: Apple is a good example of how this isn’t the case… IF they had a s*%t product the storytelling would be for nothing.”

Here’s the truth: Apple built its empire on stories.

Apple understands a product’s value comes from how it makes customers FEEL.

They create story-powered marketing that shows how their products will make you feel.

Take their famous “1984” Macintosh ad.

The story: The world is a dystopian horror show. Everyone marches in lock-step. Without Apple (a.k.a. with IBM’s PC which dominated the market at the time), you’ll feel like a conforming cog in the machine, a mindless minion, a victim of Big Blue tyranny.

With Apple, you’ll be an individual. You’ll be different. You’ll be free.

See for yourself:

Of course, Apple doesn’t have a s*%t product.

But Apple doesn’t win because it offered a better product than IBM and other PC makers. Apple NEVER talks directly about product features or quality.

Apple wins because it tells better stories.
