About My Dad

dad in hospital

I’ve completed another lap around the sun.

Time to stick another candle in the cake, make a wish, and blow ’em out.

And time to write about Dad.

This has become a tradition for me: Tell a story or two about Dad on March 7 — the day I was born (1965) and the day he died (1990).

His name is Wally Ruwitch, and in June 1989 he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer.

Eight months later, in February 1990, I flew home to St. Louis to be with him. He was at Barnes Hospital, and I knew he wasn’t coming home.

I don’t know how he held on until March 7, but I like to think he wanted to hang around until my birthday.

He knew it was coming. On March 6, as I left his hospital room, he whispered, “See you tomorrow, T. Big day.”

Those were the last words he spoke to anyone in our family. I saw him the next morning — on my 25th birthday — and then he was “gone.”

But he’s not gone.

He’s right here, in this email, inspiring me (and perhaps you) with his selflessness and courage.

He’s an angel on my shoulder, speaking to me, offering advice, making an impact.

Dad inspires me to make an impact. And he reminds me:

Our impact can outlast our time on earth.

I don’t know how many more laps I have.

But maybe, when I’m no longer running, something I’ve said or done will have stuck.

That’s what gets me up in the morning. That’s what inspires my work. And I hope that makes Dad proud.
