Storytelling Lessons From a Good Song by Taylor Swift

listening to music

Driving yesterday from St. Louis to Kansas City, Melissa and I listened to one of my favorite podcasts called “Good Songs.”

The singer/songwriter Peter Himmelman and his son Isaac pick a song they love and discuss it briefly.

As we drove through Kingdom City, MO, we listened to the episode about Taylor Swift’s song “Tis the Damn Season,” which is a song I happen to love.

Peter said this about it:

“She’s bringing me into her interior world…And the more detail, the more interior it is, the more universal it becomes…This is the beauty of a good songwriter. You make somebody feel their own life so they start to inhabit the song.”

After Peter said this, I turned to Melissa and announced, “I’m going to write an email about that tomorrow morning.”

And here I sit, doing just that.

Here’s why…

Peter’s take on good songwriting applies to ALL good storytelling, all good content creation.

When we deliver great stories, our readers/listeners/viewers see something universal in them.

They can see themselves in them.

They can relate to them.

They inhabit them.

And when prospects see themselves in your stories…

…they know that you get them.

And if you get them…

…they trust and like you.

And if they trust and like you…

…they’re more likely to do business with you.

Don't go away yet..
