The average engagement rate for an Instagram account is 0.6%. That means six people out of 1,000 engage with the content in some way.

And what about those “influencers” who have cracked the code, built giant followings, and mastered this medium? Their average engagement rate is 1.2%

Miriam spoke yesterday at Brian Kurtz’s Titans XL mastermind.

Her topic: “INSTA-CONNECT” — how Instagram helps her connect with prospects and build her business.

You may be thinking: “Wait… A 0.6% engagement rate, and she’s touting Instagram as a critical part of her marketing machine” (That’s what I was thinking during the presentation).

Miriam’s answer: “You can’t just rely on social media.” You have to turn Instagram followers into email subscribers.

The average email open rate across all industries is 24%, Miriam said. (My open rate is much higher, and yours can be too — if you deliver info-taining emails like this one).

That means you’ll have 24 “engagements” (opens) for every 100 emails you send. Want 24 engagements on Instagram? You need 4,000 followers — on average — to get 24 engagements, Miriam said.

Her bottom line:

“Email is still the king… It’s much easier to make money building an email list.”
