Why Great Creators Have Their Heads in The Clouds
When Dixie Gillaspie was growing up in Kansas, her father used to say, “Dixie, get your head out of the clouds.”
Dixie refused.
“I don’t want to get my head out of the clouds,” Dixie recently told me, “Because my ‘head in the clouds time’ to anybody else might look like idle daydreaming. For me, it was creating in the mind before I could create in the material sense… It’s got to form somewhere.”
Wise words.
Dixie said this on my podcast, The Story Power Marketing Show, during an episode called “How to Become a Super Creator For Joy and Abundance.”
In an email to her online family, Dixie summarized the episode:
Our conversation ranged from how so many of us (especially entrepreneurs) struggle to find joy in what we do to create abundance to how we are creating all.the.time – consciously or not.
We talked about how so many people get STUCK in “hustle and grind” or “vibrate and wait” while trying to create abundance, thinking that joy happens when abundance is created.
But mostly we talked about how people wait to create until they feel the magic.
How they avoid the act of creation because they’re searching for their muse or chasing the storm, trying to fill the page with brilliance or catch lightning in a bottle.
Maybe you’ve felt that way. Stuck. Waiting for something beyond you to make magic happen. Maybe a muse. Maybe a lightning bolt.
But it doesn’t work. As Dixie put it on the podcast:
“If you’re looking for the muse OUT THERE you’re already lost.”
It’s not about the external muse or the lightning. It’s about you, Dixie says.
Enter ‘head in the clouds time.”
Like Dixie’s dad, the casual observer may dismiss this as idle time-wasting. It’s not.
It’s part of the creative process.
It’s about putting yourself in the way of inspiration, as Jeff Tweedy would say.
It’s about drawing from the creative power within you.
When Dixie creates something “magical,” it happens because she has put in the work. She has developed habits, processes, and rituals. She has spent time with her head in the clouds. She has designed and practiced ways to tap into her intuition.
And, as Dixie says…
“The cool thing is that (the) ‘ritual’ for ‘conjuring’ words is something anyone can master.”
And Dixie and her editor, Maria Rodgers O’Rourke will show you how…
…if you sign up for her upcoming Intuitive Writing and Story Crafting Workshop, September 8-10 in St. Louis.
The live workshop is designed for a small group to take deep dive into how you can capture YOUR truth on the page and craft it into captivating and transformative stories (fiction or non-fiction), speeches, marketing and leadership communication – anything where you want to create art that communicates truth.
