What’s in a Name? (A Dessert-inspired Business Fable)

1250x672

I’m in Florida (Marco Island) for a two-day meeting with Dave Dee and his Elite Mastermind group.

And when in Florida…

…I eat pie…

…key lime pie.

Every chance I get.

So after rolling in from the airport, I hit the hotel bar for lunch, enjoyed a blackened grouper sandwich, and asked the waitress, “Do you have key lime pie?”

“No,” she answered…

(Artist renderings of me:Ā šŸ„ŗĀ šŸ˜)

…but we have key lime TART.

“That’ll have to do,” I thought, and I ordered the tart.

A few minutes later, the tart arrived — a triangle of key lime filling atop a graham-cracker crust.

(Very pie-like, I thought.)

Delicious.

A few hours later, at a dockside restaurant down the road from my hotel, I gobbled a gulf shrimp wrap and fries for dinner and then asked the waitress, “Do you have key lime pie?”

“Of course, we have key lime pie,” she said.

(Artist renderings of me:Ā šŸ˜€Ā šŸ¤—)

A few minutes later, the pie arrived — a triangle of key lime filling atop a graham-cracker crust.

Nearly identical to the tart. (Hmmmmmm).

I wondered aloud: “What’s the difference between ‘key lime PIE’ and ‘key lime tart/'”

My friend and mastermind partner Justin replied: You can charge twice as much for a “tart.'”

And therein lies today’s pie-inspired business lesson:

Names matter!

Do you offer a free consultation to turn prospects into clients? Don’t call it a “Free Consultation.” Name it something that describes the outcome you deliver.

Do you describe your three-step process on your website? Don’t call it your “three-step process.” Call it something that makes it sound unique and valuable.

You get the idea.

Do you have some tart-like names for your offerings? Shoot me a reply and let me know what you’ve come up with.
