This Gave Me Hope

I haven’t spent much time on social media or news sites this week.

So it goes after a tornado destroys half your roof and levels your backyard (here’s that story).

You tune out the noise and hyper-focus on the stuff that matters most.

All of the petty conflict, anger, and hatred that fills the news and social media sites goes silent.

You have to silence it.

And when you do, you begin to see a brighter light.

On Saturday, the day after the storm, I was standing in my front yard when a guy with a wheelbarrow walked past me toward my neighbor Jermal’s yard.

“Good morning,” I said. “Are you a friend of Jermal’s?”

“No,” he said. “I don’t know him. But I heard from a friend he needs help.”

Within an hour, 15 people were in Jermal’s yard, helping him dig out.

Same thing in yards up and down my neighborhood and across St. Louis.

Same thing in my yard: Clark, Michele, Harry, Ginger, Justin, Fred, Bobby, Matt, Elizabeth, Clayton, Pat, Giacomo, Harbor, Brian, Bobbie, Elizabeth, Mike, Sarah, Hobie, Julia, and Jeff.

They all spent hours in our yard, over two days. Lopping and chainsawing branches and limbs. Picking, sweeping, and shoveling rubble. Digging us out. Giving us hope.

Speaking of hope…

It’s easy to go down the social media and news rabbit holes and conclude that people suck. Those sites feed on the suckiness. Conflict sells. Controversy gets clicks. Politicians divide to conquer.

This weekend reminded me how beautiful and giving and caring people can be.

It gives me hope.

Don't go away yet..
