The Sad Tale of How “Leads” Galore Got me Nowhere

1250x672

A long, long time ago, I used to market my software business by buying a booth at a local business expo.

I’d meet with my sales reps a few weeks before the expo, and we’d discuss how to attract leads to the booth.

The debate usually came down to this: Which cool gizmo could we offer in a raffle to draw people to the booth whom we could contact after the show and — hopefully — convert to clients.

One year it was the latest Palm Pilot (I told-ja this was a long, long time ago). Another year, it was a wireless speaker. I remember the time we got lazy and offered a Visa gift card.

Those gizmos and gift cards drew ’em in, alright…

…but the “convert to clients” part rarely worked out. Here’s why:

We offered the WRONG lead magnet.

Getting loads-o’-“leads” is easy. Raffle a popular gizmo. Collect business cards fron anyone you meet at networking events. Buy a list. Scrape names from your social media feed.

“Leads” galore.

But when you reach out to them and ask them to learn more or meet or buy…

…they disappear faster than my Palm Pilot battery used to drain.

You waste time, energy, and money following up with people who love gizmos and gift cards but have no interest in you and your business.

The trick isn’t to get the MOST leads.
You have to get the RIGHT leads.

And to do that,
you need to offer the right lead magnet.

How do you create the right lead magnet that will attract people who want to engage with you? And then… how do you convert those leads into profitable clients?

I’ll answer on Tuesday when I host aĀ complimentary masterclassĀ called:Ā “How to Get More High-Quality Leads and Convert Them Into Clients — Without Working Your Tail Off.”
