The “Higher Art” to Sell Without Selling

1250x672(1)

Yesterday, I shared the one question I open every discovery call with…

…and the Jay Abraham furniture-store story that inspired it.

Let’s stay with Jay one more day.

Because underneath that opening question sits a deeper skill. And once you’ve got it, the selling almost disappears.

The backstory:

A while back, Jay Abraham and Dan Kennedy, two of the all-time great marketers on Planet Earth, sat side by side and talked about their craft for more than two hours.

Mountains of marketing wisdom, drawn from decades on the front lines. Still dead-on today.

My favorite moment?

Jay said, “I have always had hopeless curiosity.”

Then he and Dan unpacked why that’s a superpower for anyone who wants to land clients.

Jay: “If you understand Socratic interviewing — not being manipulative or diabolical or covert or surreptitious — you can distill out of somebody… the essence… Try to find out what’s interesting about someone else in their own creation story.”

Dan took it one step further:

“So most salespeople, if they’re good, they get good at telling stories. The higher art is getting others to tell you their stories. And if you get good at that, by the way, you almost don’t have to sell. I mean, at the end of it, they’ll just hand over a box of money.”

Holy treasure chest, Batman.

That’s marketing gold.

And it’s Story Power Principle #1: Keep the focus on your prospect’s emotional journey.

Great marketers don’t lead with “Look at me.”

They get curious. They ask. They listen… until the prospect feels one thing:

“Wow. You see me. You get me.”

Do that, and you don’t have to pitch, prod, and hard-sell.

The prospect leans in and asks you, “So… how do we get started?”

That’s the whole game.

You discover the story first. “The essence,” as Jay calls it. Then you assemble content (and conversations) that reflect it right back at them. And the right clients come.

You’ve got Principle #1.
