Perspective is Everything

Rory Sutherland is Vice Chairman at the giant ad agency Ogilvy UK. In this 2011 TED talk, he says several profound and powerful things, including: “Things are not what they are; they are what we think they are.” and “The circumstances of our lives may actually matter less to our happiness than the sense of control we feel over our lives.”

This is aĀ great presentation. I watched it twice over the weekend. And I’ll watch it a few more times this week. Loaded with valuable lessons for business and life.Ā

How to Excel by Elimination

A tiny book that packs a massive punch.

Detox, Declutter, Dominate: How to Excel By Elimination (by Perry Marshall and Robert Skrob) is only 37 pages. You can plow through it in under an hour. Then you’ll want to go back through the book and study it — carefully, methodically.

The book reveals how to:

  • Grow your business 4X faster by eliminating 80% of wasted effort.
  • Develop the ability to say, “No!” to the activities that don’t serve you and your business so you can focus on the ways that will have the greatest positive impact.
  • Scale your business so you earn more while overcoming overwhelm.

That’s a lot to pack into 37 pages.

Ted Prodromou and I have chosen this classic as our September selection for theĀ Mastermind Book Club.Ā
Ā
Every month, Ted and I choose a book for club members to discuss. The club is free to join. Here’s aĀ link to join.

You can read the book ā€“ but only IF YOU WANT TO.

In the MBC community, members will share short videos, blog posts, and other conversation-starters.

You can comment and participate in any conversation you choose…

…or you can start your post/conversation.

On the fourth Thursday every month, we gather online for a Book Club meeting.

The idea:

  • Share insights drawn from the book.
  • Discuss how to apply those insights to improve your business.
  • Celebrate success as you or other members implementĀ
  • The key word above: IMPLEMENT.Ā

The Role Empathy Plays in Creating Quality Content

I like thisĀ articleĀ by Fani Kelesidou, published on LinkedIn. The key idea: “content creation is inherently and profoundly meant to serve the needs of others.”

She’s right. And she backs the claim by quoting one of my favorite marketers, Ann Handley.

A good quick read.Ā

Wise Words…
…from John Locke

English philosopher John Locke was born on this day in 1632. He said this:

“There is frequently more to be learned from the unexpected questions of a child than the discourses of men.”
