Lessons From a World-class Marketer Who Loved my Email


I got lots of great feedback from subscribers after sending an email yesterday about my humiliating Cinco de Mayo mishap

My favorite response came from the great Michael DeLon — America’s Foremost Authority on Credibility Marketing — who said: 

“Well done! I could just picture being at the table, drinking margaritas with you… and telling you, ‘You have salsa on your chin!’ Great word pictures. Love it!” 

I’m not sharing this to brag. (Although when a world-class marketer like Michael DeLon dishes out high praise, I’ll take it.)

I’m sharing Michael’s feedback because it’s loaded with marketing wisdom. 

Great story-powered emails, paint great word pictures. 

Yesterday’s email is loaded with details you can picture: Filling my margarita glass to the brim. Nibbling on a tortilla chip. Salsa dripping from my chin. Melissa shaking her head and looking at me with pity. 

Close your eyes and picture the scene. The details draw you in. They invite you to the table. They spark your imagination.

Michael pictured himself there and imagined saying, “You have salsa on your chin.” 

When readers imagine themselves in your story, you’ve won.

 Your story becomes their story. They’re along for the ride. They’re paying attention. They’re captivated.

When you write powerful, captivating stories, you build bonds with your readers. They know, like, and trust you. They choose you to do business with.
