I live in a big(ish) city — St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
And every New Year’s Eve, at the stroke of midnight, it’s time to celebrate RUN FOR COVER…

(Think I’m being dramatic? Search google for “stray bullet new year’s eve.” You’ll see this is real, and it’s not just a St. Louis thing.)
Even when “safe” inside the house, we can’t escape the noise. It lasts for hours. Good luck sleeping when your neighborhood sounds like the Battle of Fallujah.
So Melissa and I have escaped. We’re spending our New Year’s Eve at our country place in the Ozark foothills, two hours from the city.
The only sound we’ll hear at midnight is the crackle of burning logs in the fireplace.
This place is in the proverbial “middle of nowhere.” In the next valley over, a couple of old-timers lived well into the 1980s — without electricity.
Until a few years ago, we were nearly off the grid. Electricity? Yes. But no cell service or internet.
Today, we have all that stuff — a cell tower a few miles away, high speed internet, satellite TV.
That’s a blessing and a curse.
Now, when I want to “get away,” I have to fight the tech temptation.
