How To Grow, Not Gripe
A long, long time ago when Groupon was the shiniest object online, I knew a lot of business owners who tried it but didn’t like it.
Groupon sales reps would woo these business owners with this promise: Instead of paying for advertising that doesn’t work, do a Groupon and get a flood of new customers who will pay you.
The business owners would create the offer (example: 50% off a large pizza). Groupon would promote the offer to its massive following. And the business would, in theory, get a flood of new customers who would return again and again and again.
In theory.
Here’s what the Groupon Gripers told me, instead: We get buried by a rush of bargain hunters. We barely broke even (or we lost money) on the discount offer. And then, when the offer has expired, we didn’t see those new customers return and sales volume fell back to previous levels.
(Ouch!)
Of course, that wasn’t the case with every business that tried Groupon. But there were Gripers galore.
Here’s the thing about the Gripers…
It was their own darn fault!
I remember saying that to a gripey restaurant owner after he told me his Groupon campaign was a massive failure.
“How many people redeemed the offer?” I asked.
“About 3,000” he said.
“And how many of those 3,000 joined your email list?” I asked.
“None. Groupon doesn’t give us the names or emails of those who buy the offer.” he replied
That’s when I told him the Groupon failure was his own darn fault.
When a new prospects or customer walks through your door, you have an opportunity to collect their email address.
Give them a reason to sign up. The restaurant could have asked those Groupon redeemers to join the birthday club. They could have offered a free appetizer on the next visit to list subscribers.
I told the restaurant owner…
“…All you had to do was ask.”
When you ask, you load your email list with happy customers and FOLLOW-UP.
You can encourage them to buy again. And you can encourage them to refer.
Sure, the initial transaction may barely offset the cost of attracting the new customers. But that’s OK if you follow-up.
The profit is in the follow-up!
So it goes for Groupon Griper restaurant owners. So it goes for you and your business. This applies to brick-and-mortar or online businesses, B2B or B2C.
You can spend long hours and big bucks on marketing tactics and advertising to attract leads and new customers.
But if you don’t capture their contact information and follow-up with them consistently, you’ll profit less…
…and gripe more.
