Does Your Job Title Repel or Attract? Here’s a Clue…

linkedin job title

A few months ago, I updated my LinkedIn profile with new job titles.

One of those titles:

“Writer’s Block Remover”

Back in the early 2000s — before I had a LinkedIn profile — a hotelier named Chip Conley did something similar with his employees.

He’d tell them: “Forget about your current job title. What would our customers call your job title if they described it by the impact you have on their lives?”

Attaboy, Chip. Wise counsel! 👏

Forget about your current job title.

Focus, instead, on how you transform your client’s lives.

I help mine get past writer’s block and move from stuck to unstuck (among other transformations).

I heard the Chip Conley story from Shawn Achor in his book The Happiness Advantage.

When you focus on the impact you make, you’re happier and you achieve more, Archor writes.

“When you make these larger connections, your mundane tasks not only become more palatable, but you perform them with far greater dedication, and see greater returns in performance as a result.”

And here’s something Shawn Achor did not write, but I know to be true:

When you define and describe yourself based on the impact you make…

…prospects pay more attention and are more likely to hire you.

The Happiness Advantage is loaded with great insights. That’s why Ted Prodromou and I chose it as this month’s selection for the Mastermind Book Club

Each month, Ted and I choose a great book. You may choose to read the book — or not.

Either way, you can join the conversation in our online community (gather ideas and insights even if you don’t read). And you can join us live-on-Zoom for our monthly discussion.

The focus: Gather insights that apply to your business so you can implement strategies and tactics to elevate your business.

Key word: Implement.

Those live meetings happen on the 4th Thursday every month. Next one: April 27, 1:30 p.m CENTRAL.
