Avoid This Personalization Mistake

I got an email this morning from a guy pitching website development that opened like this: “Hi [First Name]”

Not “Hi Tom.” Not “Hi.” The email actually said “Hi [First Name]”

That, boys and girls, is personalization gone wrong. It’s a total turn-off.

Here’s a simple fix to keep your emails from turning off prospects: If you want to personalize your greeting with contacts’ first names, make sure you have first names for everyone in your database.

If you have a small list, you can scan it yourself. If you have a large list, AI can help you do it.

If you don’t have first names for contacts (and can’t fix the database), skip the personalization, or insert a back-up word (if your email marketing platform can do that).

In the Implementum marketing platform, when you personalize an email by inserting a contact’s first name, you can designate a backup word to appear if you don’t have a first name for the given contact. (Example: Insert “there” so the email opens “Hi there” if there is no first name in the database for the contact).
