🎶 “Quincy” on Netflix

Quincy Jones died on Sunday. He was 91. He was a great jazz trumpeter. But he’ll be remembered most as a legendary arranger and producer — perhaps, the most important of his age.

He arranged and produced some of Frank Sinatra’s greatest recordings — including my favorite, “Fly Me to the Moon.”

A year earlier he produced Lesley Gore’s “It’s My Party.” (You know… “It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to.”)

He arranged music for Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, and Ray Charles). He produced albums for Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer, Sarah Vaughan, and…

…Michael Jackson (“Off the Wall” and “Thriller” albums), among many others.

He organized the session and arranged the music for “We Are the World” (here’s a great documentary about that).

He was the first African-American to score major Hollywood films.

I believe you achieve mastery when you study masters — not just in your field, but across all fields. Quincy Jones was a master, and his career is loaded with lessons for anyone who wants to study it.

A good place to start: Netflix’s 2018 documentary “Quincy.” Here’s the trailer

…and she is a sales coach and consultant you need to know and follow…

…if you want to sell better and get more clients without pressure, pitching or pretending to be someone else.

This is a live workshop, tomorrow, October 8th, 9 am PST/12 pm EST.

📚 Scientific Advertising by Claude Hopkins

The great David Ogilvy once said, “Nobody should be allowed to have anything to do with advertising until he has read this book seven times. It changed the course of my life.”

Written more than 100 years ago, this book remains relevant today — for anyone who wants to understand the core principles of marketing and advertising.

You can find this book in a variety of formats and prices. Here’s a free .pdf version. Here’s a free Kindle version. And here’s a paperback edition for $4.99.

You can read this tiny book in one sitting. And then you can discuss with other business people how its principles apply today.

“Scientific Advertising” is this month’s selection for the Mastermind Book Club. Each month, Ted Prodromou and I choose a great business book to read and discuss.

Club members meet monthly (this month on November 21) to discuss the book and how to apply its lessons to their businesses.

You don’t have to read the book to join the discussion. But you have to join the club (it’s free) to get the meeting invitation.
