Robotic “Personalization” Gone Wrong
It’s time for another episode of Spammy Spam and the Spammers who Spam Me.
This turd of an AI-powered email plopped into my inbox over the weekend:
Hi Tom,
As you celebrated the success of your Mastermind Book Club Co-Founder role at Story Power Marketing, I’m excited to share that your team’s efforts in transforming content from boring to brilliant, turning marketing from frustrating to fun, and converting results from pitiful to profitable have not gone unnoticed. Your unique blend of journalistic expertise, honed during your time as a Reporter at Winchester Star and Education Reporter at Belleville News-Democrat, has undoubtedly contributed to your company’s remarkable achievements.
I’d love to explore how our AI-powered sales agents at <spammer’s company> can help Story Power Marketing accelerate its growth trajectory in the current business quarter, Q2. Our platform has already demonstrated its potential in enhancing customer engagement through personalized emails, and I believe our AI agents can drive meaningful conversations with your target audience, leading to increased conversions and revenue generation.
Would you be open to a brief chat to discuss how our technology can support your team’s objectives? You can initiate a chat using the link [Attachment] Story Power Marketing agenda and we can schedule a meeting at your convenience.

My favorite line: “Our platform has already demonstrated its potential in enhancing customer engagement through personalized emails”
Really? Is the spam you sent me an example of this “potential?”
Because, if so, I ain’t buying!
All I see here is an AI-generated, paint-by-numbers nothing-burger — overloaded with toppings scraped from my LinkedIn profile.
Am I supposed to be impressed and think you “know” me better than the other spammers who pester me on LinkedIn? (I’m not, and I don’t).
At the risk of sounding like a wacky HUMAN BEING, I don’t want to hear from AI-powered sales agents.
I want to connect with human sales agents who wish to know and converse with me in authentic, non-robotic ways.
Maybe these AI-powered sales agents with their scraped “personalization” can generate sales — just as high-volume spammers can.
That doesn’t mean you should sell that way — especially if you want to establish meaningful, long-lasting, lucrative relationships with clients who know, like, and trust you.
You establish those relationships by standing out as the human to hire in your niche. You stand out by delivering info-taining, story-powered content.
Leave the AI-powered, paint-by-numbers personalization to the marketers who want to be part of the robotic, mushy middle. No personality. No authenticity. Racing to the bottom.
