A Rembrandt-inspired Cure for Writer’s Block
For many decades, a painting called Portrait of a Young Woman hung in the Allentown Art Museum.
Curators thought an unknown artist — a disciple of Rembrandt’s — created the portrait. It resembled the Dutch master’s work, but it wasn’t Rembrandt’s…
…or so they thought.
When Allentown curators sent the painting to be cleaned, conservators at New York University discovered it WAS Rembrandt’s work.
Allentown had a unknown, priceless masterpiece hanging in plain sight.
What does this have to do with writer’s block?
I hear often from business leaders who struggle to conjure ideas for emails, social posts, and other content. They’re stuck and frustrated.
My response: Look in your inbox and outbox. You have treasures hanging there in plain sight.
Your prospects and clients send you emails with questions. They share their frustrations and concerns. They reveal their dreams and aspirations.
You reply with useful feedback.
And you can repurpose those conversations to create content.
I’ve written 8 gazillion emails (give or take a few gazillion) that begin with something like this: “A client recently asked…” or “I heard from a frustrated business owner who told me…”
I choose the conversations that will be relevant to a broader audience.
So if you’re feeling stuck, visit your inbox and outbox. See what’s hanging there. You’re sure to find some priceless content.
Thanks for reading.
