How TV’s Greatest Host Can Help You Be a Great Marketer

tv host

I was browsing through some of my favorite old marketing training discs the other day and came across one by Dave Dee

…whom I still listen to today.

Back in 2007 Dave offered some unconventional advice about how to write better emails:

Watch Regis Philbin on television, Dave advised.

I don’t recall what I thought about that advice in 2007.

But when I heard it again a few days ago, I thought, “That is genius.”

Dave’s point was this: If you’re going to write good emails, you have to share good stories. You have to entertain. You have to get personal. You have to expose your personality…

….And that’s exactly what Regis Philbin did every morning when he opened his television show.

Watch Regis, Dave told us, and you’ll see how it’s done.
When Regis died in July at age 88, The LA Times published an article that called him “TV’s Greatest Host.”

The opening line: “What is a host? A person to welcome you in, to make you comfortable, to show you around and tell you what you need to know. To introduce you to other people you might find interesting.”

That’s the formula to be the greatest television host ever…

…And that’s the formula to be a great story-powered marketer

Welcome readers or viewers in.

Make them comfortable.

Show them around.

Tell them what they need to know.

Introduce them to people and resources they might find interesting.

If you do that, your emails will be better (right, Dave?).

Your blog will be better.

Your social media posts will be better.

Your webinars will be better.

Your sales consultations will be better.

You’ll attract more leads. You’ll put them on the edge of their seats, eager to learn more about your products and services. You’ll inspire them to act.

And when they do that…

…and your business grows…

…you can look up to the heavens and thank Regis Philbin for the inspiration.
