Email Away — as Long as You Don’t Drop Boredom Bombs

reading emails

I spoke yesterday to a business owner who doesn’t like getting emails…

…so she doesn’t want to send them.

“I’ll be honest about email lists or subscriptions,” she said. “I don’t really like being on them. because I always feel like I’m being bombarded by emails…So I’m only intending to send (email) out once a month.”

I get it. I’ve heard it before. I’ve felt it, too – that sensation of being bombarded with boring, “blah-blah-blah” emails, over and over and over again.

Here’s the thing though…

Your emails don’t have to be boredom bombs.

If you deliver captivating, informative, entertaining emails, subscribers will welcome them. Many will devour them. Very, very few will feel “bombarded” by them.

I advised her to focus on creating captivating, story-powered content and sending more than one per month.

“I’m not suggesting that you send daily emails,” I said. “But I am saying you (should) send emails that are captivating and interesting. When you get to that point, sending more than one a month is critical. If you can’t get to a point where you’re sending interesting and captivating emails, then don’t even send once a month, once a quarter, once a year.”

The bottom line:

If you’re sending interesting, captivating, entertaining emails, you can send a lot. Sure, you can send just once a month. But you’ll sell more if you send more.

Subscribers will look forward to your emails. They may not read every one, but they won’t resent you for sending them.

If you’re sending boring “blah, blah, blah,” information-only emails, you’re wasting time — yours and your subscribers’. They’ll tune out and move on. Then you’re stuck.

It doesn’t matter whether you send one or 1,000. Boring is boring. Spare yourself and your subscribers the pain.

Speaking of one or 1,000…
how’s your list-building going?

All those captivating, informative, entertaining emails will be worthless to you if you don’t grow a list of eager subscribers.

The bigger your list, the more you’ll earn.

I repeat: The bigger your list, the more you’ll earn.

How do you grow your list? Market to the maybes!

Interact with those who may be interested. Give them a chance to raise their hands. Follow-up with captivating emails (more than once a month!)

The best marketers know how to do that authentically and effectively.
